The main event match for AEW's Double or Nothing PPV is "Hangman" Adam Page vs CM Punk, so in wrestling tradition, we have a "go home" promo.
Here are some talking points from the promo.
- Punk plays this promo primarily as a white meat babyface, telling the crowd he loves them and is committed to becoming the AEW Champion.
- Page tries to fire up on Punk about how determined he is.
- Punk puts him over as a talent and says he is just the next in line and nothing personal.
- Page goes off on Punk and talks about how he is going to destroy Punk. He begins speaking in a confusing way about Punk and hints about the type of person he is.
- Punk talks about Page talking in circles and reminds Page that Punk is the one who built the current business they are in. Segment essentially ends with Page punching Punk.
Analysis
Absolutely drives me nuts when talent takes the mic away from the interviewer. The difference with this one is Page took the mic from Tony Schiavone and then gave it back to him. When wrestlers do that, it makes the interviewer look dumb and sadly Tony has shuffled around the ring so many times in promos for AEW that you almost feel bad for him.
This promo was all over the place with Adam Page, way too wordy, and went too long. Page (in my opinion) has had a tough road to being looked at as a legit world champion and it's even more difficult now with some of the superstar talent that has been brought in to AEW. Bryan Danielson worked perfectly as a heel for him to get sympathy, but the heel side of the roster is very limited in who can get sympathy from him.
Is CM Punk turning heel? This confusing segment may be leading that way. The only outcome that makes sense is if Punk wins the title. If he does turn heel, that is the perfect wrestler for Page to chase to get him to the next level.
The end result, the crowd was into Punk and 50/50 on Page. There is interest in the match, despite my take on this promo.
